Dr. Kabir Abubakar is the Medical Director and Chief Executive of Ansar Orthospinal Hospital.
A Nigeria and Germany trained Orthopaedic, Trauma and Spine Surgeon who has three decades of experience in medical practice. As a past Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala – Kano (June 2005 to July 2013), he also comes with experience in hospital administration.
His basic medical degree (MBBS) is from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria (1989). He earned the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons by passing the exit examination in April 1998, after six years of gruelling surgical training.
His post fellowship training in Germany started with The AO Trauma Fellowship at the Department of Surgery, University of Ulm, (October 2000) and a spine course at the Rehabilitation Krankenhaus of the same University in 2001. This was followed up by several clinical visits to the department of spine surgery St. Josef’s Hospital, Wiesbaden, Germany. This set the foundation for the development of instrumented spine surgery that he pioneered at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala-Kano, in 2005.
Proficiency in any branch of surgery is achieved by attending courses and fellowships. He has pursued this vigorously by attending various courses, these include AO Spine courses at Davos, Switzerland (Cervical Spine) and Dubai (Advanced Degenerative Spine). Others are Microscopic Spine Surgery course in India and Arab Spine Diploma Course in Dubai.
He was a fellow in spine surgery at the following hospitals:
- Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital, University of Oxford, United Kingdom
- BGU Klinik, Frankfurt am-Main, Germany
- Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, India
Dr. Abubakar is Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, AO Trauma and AO Spine and a graduate of Arab Spine Diploma course Dubai, UAE.

Insatiable thirst for orthopaedic knowledge has literally taken him all over the world, having attended international courses, conferences and workshops in Africa, Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East.
He has published over twenty papers in peer reviewed scientific journals.
Areas of expertise include routine and complex trauma, cervical, and thoracolumbar spine including deformity surgery, arthroplasty and ‘orthoplastic’ procedures.
He is a family man. Born in Funtua, Katsina State, he has had all his children in Kano, where he has spent the greater part of his adult and entire professional life.
